Robotics, Data and AI in Manufacturing – Assembly & Machining

Track: Robotics and AI / Data

Date and Time: 14 Mar 2023 14:30-15:50

Organisers: Daniela Sawyer, Gianmarco Pisanelli

Main questions to be answered: What is the current state of robotics, data and AI implementation in manufacturing applications?

Additional questions: What are the barriers to adoption of robotics in high accuracy manufacturing applications?

Additional questions 2: How can automation further improve manufacturing and what can be done to increase impact?

Workshop Description: The use of data and AI opened new possibilities in the world of robotics research. Automation and now the need for automation of automation is a reality that the manufacturing sector is confronted with if stakeholders want to stay relevant and ahead of the game. However, the adoption of robotics within some manufacturing sectors and furthermore, the adoption of robotics, data and AI is going at a disputable slower pace, despite its promised benefits. According to the latest ‘World Robotics – Industrial Robots 2023’ report from IFR, the installation of robots in the metal, machinery and assembly sectors is in decline. This workshop aims to bring together experts from research and industry to discuss the challenges, opportunities and state-of-the-art of robotics, data and AI use in the manufacturing sector, with an emphasis on assembly and machining applications.

Intended Outcome: Workshop covering material new to ERF that the Robotics community should engage with

Approach: The workshop will be structured in a 40 minutes slot with 4 experts in the field doing short presentations of 6 minutes on the posed questions, followed by discussions with audience and collating answers to the posed questions. The panelists are from a variety of backgrounds within robotics. The answers will be collated for further processing. Potential to publish the results in a magazine/article if the participation and interaction is achieved.
