The pioneering European Projects driving innovation within manufacturing SMEs

The Department of Industrial Engineering (DIEF) at the University of Florence is a comprehensive hub focusing on the cultural, scientific, and professional aspects of technological innovations. Within its diverse research groups, DIEF is actively engaged in rehabilitation and assistance robotics, Industry 4.0 technologies, renewable energies, nanotechnologies, and bioengineering, contributing to the development of human-machine interactions.

The Robot Vision Lab, part of the Intelligent Autonomous Systems Lab at the Department of Information Engineering of the University of Padua, is active in the fields of computer vision and robot vision, and is particularly focused on human-robot interaction. The IASLab is also active in neurorobotics, robotic perception and navigation, task and motion planning, causal discovery.

Eagleprojects is an international entity committed in several macro-sectors and challenges: infrastructure engineering, software development and robotics&AI. The European Robotics Forum is an initiative of euRobotics in cooperation with a local co-host. euRobotics aisbl (Association Internationale Sans But Lucratif) is a Brussels based international non-profit association for all stakeholders in European robotics. It aims to strengthen Europe’s competitiveness and to ensure industrial leadership of manufacturers, providers and end-users of robotics technology-based systems and services.

The objectives of euRobotics are to boost European robotics research, development and innovation, and to foster a positive perception of robotics. It aims at:

  • strengthening competitiveness and ensuring industrial leadership of manufacturers, providers, and end users of robotics technology-based systems and services;

Our vision is to Extend Human Capabilities beyond Physical Presence, instead of replacing them, to ultimately scale the world’s labour capacity. Fieldrobotics is an academic spin-off company participated by University of Bologna, founded 2 years ago, which designs, industrializes and markets aerial (drones) and ground (rovers) robotic systems that autonomously carry out processing and/or monitoring activities in agriculture and search and rescue. The company operates at the intersection of three domains: mechanics, electronics/software and electrification. The key word is therefore: integration.

The Institute for Software & Systems Engineering (ISSE), directed by Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Reif, is a scientific institution within the Faculty of Applied Computer Science at the University of Augsburg. It was founded to further invigorate and push the main research in Augsburg by pooling strengths and competences. In research, the institute supports both fundamental and application-oriented research in all areas of software and systems engineering.

Fondazione Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia- IIT, is a scientific research center established by law in 2003 in order to promote excellence in both basic and applied research and to facilitate the economic development at national level. IIT scientific activities are multidisciplinary and with a very strong approach to technology transfer. The four main fields fields of research are Computational Sciences, Life Tech, Robotics and Nano Materials.

KELO Robotics is a startup located in Augsburg Germany. KELO has currently two business branches and two types of robots: ROBILE, a highly modular construction kit for research and education in mobile service robotics and mobile manipulation AND collaborative mobile logistics robots. KELO’s robots are omni-directional and force controlled. They can therefore fully comply with an external force acting on them. With this KELO opens the door for new safety concepts in mobile robotics.

Based in Montreal, Canada, Kinova is a leader in innovative robotics. Founded in 2006, the company designs and manufactures robots for various markets, including medical robotics, assistive robotics, research and education, industrial and professional automation.

Leo Rover is an outdoor developer-ready 4×4 mobile robot desiged tough enough to withstand both harsh environment and harsh experiments. The robot itself is open-source, based on ROS and with video streaming and addons capacity working out-of-the-box. Together with 24/7 free Slack support it’s the exact tool needed for robotics reserachers, scientists and educators all over the World to kickstart their way to mobile robots. And … it’s much fun! Because who said robotics can’t be fun?

MAB Robotics’ mission is to make robotics services and hardware more accessible. The company is mainly focused on legged robotics and high-performance robotics actuators.

ODU Group: global representation with perfect connections

Qualisys is a leading provider of motion capture technology and has a long history of supplying research, engineering, entertainment, and sports facilities with high-end camera systems and expertise in capturing and analyzing movements.

Resense is a Joint Venture between the mechatronics component manufacturer WITTENSTEIN and measurement equipment specialist WIKA that develops and markets miniaturized 6-axis force torque sensors. Resense sensors provide pioneering applications in medical technology, haptics, robotics and micromanipulation with a sense of touch.

ReWing is an innovative startup devoted to the design and development of technologies for sensorimotor rehabilitation in patients with orthopedic and neurological impairments. Mixing robotics and AI, ReWing products can be valuable tools also for research studies in a wide range of fields or for advanced sport training.

RobCo GmbH – founded in 2020 by a team led by Roman Hölzl at the Chair of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence at the Technical University of Munich – offers medium-sized industrial companies adaptable, affordable and networked robot solutions to automate repetitive manual tasks. These are based on a patented and world-first modular hardware kit and the RobCo Studio software platform. Whether machine tending, palletizing, dispensing or welding – RobCo’s modular robot kits are versatile and intuitive.

Robotics4EU is a four-year European project funded by the Horizon 2020 program. It aims to contribute to a more widespread adoption of (AI-based) robots in healthcare, inspection, and maintenance of infrastructure, agri-food, and agile production. The project supports and empowers the EU-wide responsible robotics community, representing robotics innovations from companies and academia.

Clearpath Robotics by Rockwell Automation is a global leader in unmanned vehicle robotics for research and development, and provides hardware, software, and services to enable mobile robotics product deployment and operation.

TU Delft Robotics Institute unites all research at TU Delft in the field of robotics. Its main challenge is to get robots and humans to work together effectively in unstructured environments, and real settings. Within the institute both the ‘hard’ robot disciplines (mechatronics, embedded systems, control and Artificial Intelligence) and the ‘soft’ robot sciences (human-machine interaction, user interaction, architecture, ethics, security and design) have a prominent presence.

UNITREE ROBOCITS, established in 2016, promoted robots to the global market in 2017. Unitree was one of the earliest manufacturers of quadruped robots in the world, and an outstanding pioneer in the marketization of global high-performance quadruped robots who is fully committed to promoting mobile robots to truly enter people’s lives.

The Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre (UTC) in Manufacturing and On-wing Technology at the University of Nottingham is a multi-disciplinary research team exploring all aspects of robotics, with a particular interest in the areas of developing robotic systems for keyhole inspection and repair of high-value industrial systems and minimally invasive surgery.

WITTENSTEIN develops, produces and sells customized products, systems and solutions for highly dynamic motion, maximum-precise positioning and smart networking for mechatronic drive technology – particularly in the field of cybertronic motion. It is our unique capacity for innovation that drives us to further develop the essential technology for electromechanical drive systems and pioneer new areas of applications.
